From School Library Journal KindergartenGrade 3This gentle story focuses on the power of poetry and on the ability of humans to communicate with the world of nature. Each winter when it storms, Johnny goes out in his boots to write poems in the snow. His nononsense parents think him strange; yet, in the spring the ducks fly in wild loops, jumping into the air because of the words he has written. As Johnny grows older, he continues to write his poems every winter. Although his wife, children, and grandchildren pay him no heed, each spring the birds, fish, otters, seals, and whales respond in an explosion of joy, celebrating the power of his words. As powerful as the story's message may be, the real strength of the title lies in the soft pastel hues of Stammen's coloredpencil illustrations. Completely reinforcing the mood of the text, the drawings extend the sense of magic and spirituality of the story. While they show realistic scenes from farm life, they often blend the actual with the imagined. The scenes featuring the various forms of wildlife have a tremendous sense of movement, conveying a feeling of celebration that contrasts sharply with the calm of the human scenes. Somewhat reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown's Wait 'til the Moon Is Full (HarperCollins, 1948), Leavitt's work will serve as a pleasant snowy day readaloud. Use it to tie together Language Arts and Science, for it is sure to promote the writing of nature poems.Nancy MenaldiScanlan, LaSalle Academy, Providence, RICopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description A young boy begins writing poems in the snow that are read and responded to by wildlife, and he continues writing them throughout his life.
