El trabajo de investigacin que aqu se presenta parte de la hiptesis de que la evaluacin de programas sociales no es solamente una cuestin tcnica de la nueva gestin pblica de la poltica social, sino que su significado opera en el mantenimiento y reproduccin de las relaciones de poder en la sociedad. El punto de partida del anlisis es el seguimiento de un estudio de caso que sigue el tratamiento que convencionalmente se ha dado a la evaluacin orientado hacia la contabilidad social del costo beneficio de los programas de desarrollo. Con una perspectiva complementaria e innovadora la investigacin incluye el dilogo entre los individuos que conforman una intervencin social en el campo de la poltica social y la red de conocimientos sobre estrategias para combatir la pobreza que emergen de las prcticas cotidianas. Adems se describe el contexto de los arreglos institucionales, se analiza el discurso, prcticas y objetos del desarrollo y su evaluacin como una cultura en construccin de acuerdo a ciertos patrones de significacin movilizados por mecanismos de transmisin y procesos de valoracin econmica y simblica.
