L'auteur tudie successivement la vie politique (poursuite du combat, infiltrations sovitiques, compromissions), la vie religieuse, prodigieuse par ses capacits cratrices de renouvellement, la vie culturelle, littraire et artistique, non moins prodigieuse, illustre par le prix Nobel Ivan Bounine, un Chagall, un Stravinski, etc.L'auteur traite enfin de l'migration pendant la guerre (participation des migrs la rsistance, rapatriements forcs, dparts volontaires) et, plus brivement, de la dernire vague, domine par la figure exceptionnelle de Soljnitsyne.En annexe, un dictionnaire des personnalits les plus minentes de l'migration compte environ cinq cents noms.Nikita Struve, professeur l'Universit de Nanterre, est le directeur des ditions YMCA Press, principale maison d'dition russe en Occident, tablie Paris. Il a t notamment l'diteur russe d'Alexandre Soljnitsyne.
