En la actualidad las fibras pticas de Polmero (Polymer Optical Fiber, POF) estn empezando a ser utilizadas en varios campos, como por ejemplo: la industria automotriz, las redes de datos, la medicina, la industria aeroespacial, etc. A pesar de que en las POF se cuenta con anchos de banda de alrededor de las centenas de MHz (en distancias menores a 30 m.), en todos los campos antes mencionados se tiene la necesidad caracterstica del aumento del ancho de banda debido principalmente a la necesidad de contar con altas velocidades de transmisin; y, considerando que a futuro existirn servicios que requerirn una mayor disponibilidad de ancho de banda, una solucin adecuada sera la implementacin de WDM (Wavelenght Division Multiplexing).
