Sorayamas work Sexy Robot, published by Genkosha in 1983, made his organic robotic forms famous around the world. For the work, he used ideas from pinup art, which in the book then appear as chromeplated gynoids in suggestive poses. His next book, Pinup (Graphicsha, 1984), continue in the same line. A number of his other works similarly revolve around figures in suggestive poses, including highly realistic depictions in latex and leather. His pinups appeared frequently in the pages of Penthouse magazine. In 1985 Sorayama published the video Illustration Video,[7] his first work apart from the books of illustrations. This includes works in the movies Brain Dead (1992), Timecop (1994) and Space Trucker (1995), design of trading cards, limited edition prints, CD Roms, art exhibitions and the initial industrial design for Sonys AIBO robotic pet. From 1985 to 2010 has been a very busy period for Sorayama who is releasing his new book Master Works in late spring of 2010.

I couldn’t believe how quickly this book arrived! The artwork is breathtaking, and I love that it presents both English and Japanese text. It’s a great gift for my friend who’s an art enthusiast. Definitely worth the price!

Great Art, but Lacking Some Details
The illustrations in the Sorayama book are incredible, but I was hoping for a bit more commentary or insights on the art. Still, the bilingual feature is useful for practicing my Japanese. It’s nice, but I feel like it could be even better!

Packaging Issues on Arrival
I was excited to get the Sorayama Hyper Illustrations, but it arrived with a slight dent on the cover. The art inside is fantastic, but I wish the packaging was better. Still, I’ll keep it because the illustrations are truly one of a kind!
