Intervino en un levantamiento liberal en Viclvaro, en 1854, y adems de distribuir armas entre la poblacin y ocupar el Ayuntamiento y la Capitana general fund el peridico La Redencin, con una actitud hostil al clero y al ejrcito. Tras el fracaso del levantamiento, se fue a Madrid y dirigi El Ltigo, peridico de carcter satrico que se distingui por sus ataques a la reina Isabel II. Sus convicciones republicanas lo implicaron en un duelo que trastorn su vida, desde entonces adopt posiciones conservadoras.
