Schlielich soll auch auf Empathie eingegangen werden, ein Bereich, in dem das Spiegelneuronensystem die neurale Basis von Intersubjektivitt sein soll. Spiegelneuronen sind Neuronen, die im Gehirn bei Beobachtung von Handlungen die selben Potenziale auslsen, wie bei der Ausfhrung gleicher Handlungen. Entdeckt wurden solche Potenziale erstmals in den 1990er Jahren von den italienischen Neurologen Vittorio Gallese und Giacoma Rizzolati an der Neurobiologischen Fakultt der Universitt Parma. Sie unternahmen Versuche an Affen und entdeckten zufllig Potenziale, die schon bei der Beobachtung von Handlungen feuerten. Whrend andere Affen oder der Experimentator die Versuchsaufgabe (Greifen einer Nuss) lsten bzw. aufbauten, waren bei den nicht aktiven, nur beobachtenden Affen Potenziale zu messen. Diese Affen hatten noch Elektroden an den Messpunkten und die Aufzeichnungsgerte waren noch eingeschaltet. Es scheint, als sei mit den Spiegelneuronen der neurologische Mechnismus gefunden, mit dessen Hilfe die fundamentale Eigenschaft der Erkennung von Handlungen plausibel und einfach erklrt werden kann und auch die Grundlage fr die Imitation motorischer Handlungen gefunden wurde. Damit wren die Spiegelneuronen grundlegend fr das menschliche Sozialverhalten verantwortlich.
