Jahrhundert herrscht in der Sprachgeschichtsforschung insofern eine erhebliche Unsicherheit, als dem System oft keine bedeutenderen Vernderungen, sondern eher ausbauende Differenzierungen zugeschrieben werden. Das Heidelberger Kolloquium, dessen Vortrge hier publiziert werden, diskutiert die mglichen Gegenstnde der Sprachgeschichtsforschung seit der beginnenden Neuzeit, mgliche Fragestellungen zu ihrer Behandlung und Methoden zu ihrer Beschreibung. Dabei wird der Geschichte der Sprachreflexion, der institutionellen Beschftigung mit Sprache, der gesellschaftlichen, geistes und literaturgeschichtlichen sowie der kulturrumlichen Verflechtung des Sprachgebrauchs besonderes Gewicht zugeschrieben.
