Seit den 80er Jahren sind diese institutionellen Strukturen fast berall in einem tiefgreifenden Wandel begriffen. Es wird gezeigt, warum diese Transformation in den 70er Jahren in den USA begann und warum diese sich danach in der gesamten industrialisierten Welt verbreitet hat.
