So drngt sich die Frage auf, inwiefern der grostdtische Kontext zu ihren jeweiligen Situationen beitrgt. Schafft es allein die Situierung in einer anonymisierten Metropole, die beiden Figuren sozial zu isolieren? Als theoretische Grundlage dieser Analyse dient Georg Simmels soziologischer Aufsatz Die Grostadt und das Geistesleben", eine bahnbrechende und noch immer gltige Untersuchung des Innenlebens von Grostdtern. Es erfolgt eine Aufschlsselung der psychologischen Gestaltung beider Hauptfiguren: Inwiefern sind ihre Charaktere verantwortlich fr ihre Position im sozialen Abseits? Auch wird die Interaktion zwischen Stadt und Individuum untersucht. Der abschlieende, fundierte Vergleich der beiden Werke stellt schlielich heraus, ob und in wieweit die Metropole die unterschiedlichsten Charaktere isolieren kann.
