The Soviet Union was the largest state in the twentiethcentury world, but its repressive power and terrible ambition were most clearly on display in Europe. Under the leadership of Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union transformed itself and then all of the European countries with which it came into contact. This volume considers each aspect of the encounter of Stalin with Europe: the attempt to create a kind of European state by accelerating the European model of industrial development in the USSR; mass murder in anticipation of a war against European powers; the actual contact with Europes greatest power, Nazi Germany, first as ally and then as enemy; four years of war fought chiefly on Soviet territory and bringing untold millions of deaths, including much of the Holocaust; and finally the reestablishment of the Soviet system, not just in prewar territory of the USSR, but in Western Ukraine, Western Belarus, the Baltic States, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and East Germany.

The book covers a fascinating period of Stalin's influence in Europe. I was captivated by the detailed accounts and how they connect to modern politics. A must-read for any history buff!

Good read but a bit dense
While the content is rich and informative, I found some parts a little overwhelming. If you’re not a history expert, it might take some effort to digest. Still, very interesting overall!

Great for history enthusiasts!
This book dives deep into Stalin's role in dominating Europe, filled with insights that made me rethink what I knew. Perfect for discussions at my book club!

Not what I expected
I was hoping for more of a narrative style, but the book is heavily focused on facts and analysis. It’s well-researched, though, so if you're into that, it might be for you.

A thorough examination
Stalin and his impact on Europe is such a complex topic, and this book does a great job laying it all out. I appreciated the thoroughness, but some chapters felt a bit long. Worth the read!
