Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit solchen Stdten, den Global Cities, einem neuen Typ von Stdten mit transkontinentalem Aktionsradius. Die Entstehung und Bedeutung des Begriffes Global City' wird untersucht und die noch relativ junge Forschungsgeschichte dieser besonderen Form der Stadtgeographie beschrieben. Ausfhrlicher eingegangen wird dabei auf die Weltstadthypothese John Friedmanns, der anhand von sieben Annahmen eine Hierarchie der Weltstdte erstellt hat, auf die Global CityThesen Saskia Sassens und auf die Arbeiten der GaWCGruppe an der Universitt Loughborough. Ein Exkurs fhrt in das Feld der Global CityRegionForschung, die auch das Umland der neuen Weltwirtschaftszentren einbezieht. Vor allem sind es drei Stdte, die die Global CityHierarchie anfhren, New York, London und Tokio, bei manchen Autoren kommt auch Paris hinzu. Warum es gerade diese Stdte sind, um die sich alles zu drehen scheint, soll untersucht werden. Dahinter herrscht reger Wettbewerb, denn die Hierarchie der Weltstdte ist kein starres Gefge. Westliche und fernstliche Metropolen buhlen mit Megastdten des Sdens um die besten oder zumindest bessere Pltze. Die negativen Folgen der Global CityWerdung, hohe Preise, Ausbeutung billiger Arbeitskrfte und extreme Ungleichheit, werden dabei bereitwillig in Kauf genommen.
