Nachspren aber mchte ich jenem dunklen Gefhl, das mich beschlich.' Werfel wei, dass man Zweig posthum wegen seines Selbstmordes Vorwrfe macht und ihn verurteilt. In seinem Essay fhrt er die Argumente der Kritiker an und nennt diese vollgltig und unwiderlegbar'. Es gelingt ihm darin aber auch, dem Leser verstndlich zu machen, warum er selbst, diese Argument gerade nicht anerkennen kann. Werfel glaubt an den Sieg des Mensch ber das sinnlose Leiden. Er ruft in seinem Essay dazu auf, an ein Leben nach dem Krieg, an das Leben schlechthin zu glauben: Wir sind keine Pazifisten. Wir verleugnen die Kriege nicht. Unser Zorn ist uns heilig. Komme was wolle, wir werden unser Leben verteidigen.' Werfel sieht in Zweig kein Vorbild, aber er erinnert daran, dass wir nicht das Recht haben, einen Selbstmrder zu verurteilen: Der tiefste Sinn des Wortes Freiheit steht und fllt damit, dass die Geschfte der Welt und hinge von ihnen das Heil des Jahrhunderts ab sich nicht in die letzte Entscheidung, in die letzte Einsamkeit zwischen Individuum und Gott eindrngen drfen.'
