Obwohl sich die Sozialgeschichte in den letzten 25 Jahren einen entscheidenden Platz in der allgemeinen Geschichtswissenschaft erobert und fr nahezu alle Zeitepochen viele neue Erkenntnisse hervorgebracht hat, wurde der Faktor Militr von Sozialhistorikern weitgehend ignoriert und bislang fast vllig ausgeblendet. Insbesondere fr die Frhe Neuzeit ist diese Ausklammerung, die in anderen Lndern unbekannt ist, unverstndlich und bedauerlich, da die Erforschung der Stehenden Heere des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts fr das weitere Verstndnis des Absolutismus unentbehrlich ist. Mit seiner 1992 abgeschlossenen Gttinger Dissertation schliet nun der Verfasser diese Forschungslcke. Mit der Auswertuung eines bislang weitgehend unbekannten Quellenbestandes gelingt ihm ein umfassendes Soziogramm der frhmodernen Garnison und Festungsstadt Gttingen. Mit dieser quellennahen Feldstudie beschreibt er eindrucksvoll nicht nur die innere Struktur des kurhannoverschen Militrs, sondern erhellt auch das wechselseitige Verhltnis auf engem Raum zusammenlebender Brger und Soldaten.
