Der niederlndische Arzt und Botaniker Steven Jan van Geuns (17671795), Studienfreund Alexander von Humboldts in Gttingen, beschreibt in seinem Tagebuch die gemeinsame Reise von 1789. Es ist nach bisherigen Erkenntnissen das einzige ausfhrliche Dokument ber diese Reise, da das Tagebuch Humboldts offensichtlich schon zu seinen Lebzeiten verloren gegangen ist. Behandelt werden wissenschaftliche Fragen und Probleme unterschiedlicher Gebiete, insbesondere der Medizin, Geologie und Mineralogie, Salinenkunde, Botanik, Landeskunde, wie auch philosophische, geschichtliche und kulturelle Fragen. Der Besuch wissenschaftlicher Sammlungen und zahlreiche Kontakte zu Wissenschaftlern waren Schwerpunkte der Unternehmung. Die daraus entstandenen frhen wissenschaftlichen Netzwerke wurden von beiden spter ausgebaut. Noch in Humboldts ''Kosmos'' wird auf Personen aus dieser Zeit Bezug genommen. Van Geuns stellte vor allem Beziehungen zu Medizinern, Chemikern und Botanikern an den besuchten Universitten her, auch diese Kontakte nach Deutschland haben fortbestanden. Dem Tagebuch sind u. a. bereits wissenschaftliche Anstze zu entnehmen, die von Humboldt und van Geuns spter in Publikationen weitergefhrt wurden zum Beispiel in Humboldts 1790 erschienenem Buch ber die Basalte am Rhein oder in den spteren pflanzengeographischen Arbeiten. Das Tagebuch ist ein kulturhistorischer Fhrer, gewissermaen ein frher Baedeker, fr Hessen, die Pfalz, das Rheingebiet und Westfalen.
