Mal nachdenken. Wie kam ich zu Jane Austen? Richtig! Eine Freundin von mir verschlang all ihre Bcher regelrecht und forderte mich immer wieder mal auf, doch auch mal was von ihr zu lesen. Hfliche Ablehnung meinerseits. Was gingen mich die langweiligen Salongesprche englischer Herrschaften an? Der Druck wurde verstrkt und als schlielich beinahe die Beziehungsfrage darber gestellt wurde, entschlo ich mich zur Lektre.Stolz und Vorurteil wurde mir wrmstens empfohlen! 'Es ist eine allgemein anerkannte Wahrheit, da ein Junggeselle im Besitz eines schnen Vermgens nichts dringenderes braucht, als eine Frau!' In diesem Falle ist der reiche Freier Mr. Darcy, der auf einem Ball Elisabeth, die intelligente Protagonistin unseres Romans, kennenlernt. Zuerst findet sie nichts als Verachtung fr diesen hochmtigen Schnsel und sein abflliges Gehabe. Elisabeths Mutter, eine geldgierige Dame, she nichts lieber, als die Verheiratung ihrer Tochter und den damit verbundenen gesellschaftlichen Aufstieg. Vater Bennet, in langjhrigem Ehepandmonium zum Zyniker geworden, hlt sich aus allem raus. Darcy wiederum verachtet die Bennets ihrer Vulgaritt und ihres niedrigen Standes wegen. Ein HappyEnd scheint ausgeschlossen doch es kommt anders. Hoppla, das waren ja geschliffenste Dialoge! Jane Austen durchleuchtet und entlarvt diese in der Klte der Konventionen erstarrte, snobistische und dnkelhafte englische Gesellschaft mit leichtestem Ton. Das Streitgesprch zwischen Elisabeth und Darcys Tante gehrt zu einem der vielen Highlights dieses Romans, der, 1813 verffentlicht, vom Publikum begeistert aufgenommen wurde. Gleichzeitig schuf Austen, die in ihren Romanen stets menschliche Schwchen und Torheiten veranschaulichte und ihren Figuren mittels brillianter Dialoge Leben einhauchte, eine der hinreiendsten Frauengestalten in der Literaturgeschichte berhaupt Elisabeth Bennett. Zu empfehlen ist brigens auch die Lektre des englischen Originals Pride and Prejudice, da die bersetzungen dem sprachlichen Genie Austens nie ganz gerecht werden. Ravi Unger
