Diese Kernthese des Buches wird illustriert durch die Interpretation von fnf Zeitgedichten aus den Jahren 1796/9799: "Die Mue", "Die Vlker schwiegen, schlummerten ...", "Der Frieden", "Buonaparte" und "Dem Allbekannten" Texten, die sich durch motivische und thematische Nhe anbieten und dadurch, dass sie noch nicht einlsslich behandelt worden sind. Sie werden besonders daraufhin gedeutet, wie sich Hlderlins Geschichtsphilosophie in Wechselwirkung mit seiner Biographie entwickelt. Es zeigt sich, dass Hlderlin den Sinn des eigenen Lebens mit der Perspektive einer vershnt in Frieden lebenden Menschengemeinschaft zu verknpfen sucht: ein existentielles Anliegen, das sich als Hauptursache fr seine sptere soziale Isolation und geistige Zerrttung erkennen lsst. Die gemeinsame Arbeit gewinnt ihre Deutungsflle aus der Verbindung unterschiedlicher Arbeitsschwerpunkte (Beyer: Philosophie; Brauer: Geschichte und Religionswissenschaft) und daraus, dass kontroverse Deutungen nicht angeglichen wurden, sondern ihr Eigenrecht behalten.
