Das 20. Jahrhundert hat unsere Kenntnis von der untergegangenen Weltreligion des Manichismus in einem Mae vergrert, wie das kaum fr eine andere Wissenschaft der Fall ist. Erstmals traten Selbstzeugnisse des Manichismus in umfangreichen, vielsprachigen Textzeugnissen und eindrucksvollen Kunstwerken ans Licht, in Turfan und anderen Orten an der Seidenstrae, in gypten und in Nordafrika. Die Erschlieung und Deutung dieses reichen Materials liegt in den Hnden zahlreicher Fachleute der klassischen und orientalistischen Philologien, der Religions und Kunstwissenschaft, und sie ist noch lange nicht abgeschlossen. Um diesen Wissenschaftlern ein gemeinsames Forum zu geben, auf dem sie ihre vielfltigen Ergebnisse einander in Vortrag und Diskussion mitteilen knnen, werden unter der Schirmherrschaft der International Association of Manichaean Studies Konferenzen durchgefhrt, deren vierte und bis dahin grte vom 14. bis 18. Juli 1997 in Berlin stattfand. In den 58 Vortrgen der Veranstaltung kamen alle Aspekte der manichischen Lehre, Kunst und Glaubenspraxis zur Sprache von den antimanichischen Schriften St.Augustins bis zu den Spuren manichischer Kultgemeinden in China, von der Philologie bis zu den schnen Knsten. Die allerneusten manichischen Textfunde in der obergyptischen Oase von Dakhle spielten eine besondere Rolle, und die Tatsache, dass der Kongress in Berlin stattfand, bot Gelegenheit, das Werk Isaac de Beausobres, der in Berlin die moderne Manichismusforschung begrndete, zu wrdigen.
