First published in 1942, Sun Chief is the autobiography of Hopi Chief Don C. Talayesva and offers a unique insider view on Hopi society. In a new Foreword, Matthew Sakiestewa Gilbert situates the book within contemporary Hopi studies, exploring how scholars have used the book since its publication more than seventy years ago.

I found the book insightful and rich in culture, but some sections were kind of dense. It took me a while to get through, and I really had to focus. Still, I enjoyed learning about the Hopi way of life.

A Deep Dive into Hopi Culture
'The Autobiography of a Hopi Indian' was an eye-opening read. The stories shared give a unique perspective on Hopi life and traditions. I really appreciated the way it was presented in the Lamar Series — it feels more authentic and engaging than just a textbook!

Interesting Stories, Slow Read
The stories in this autobiography are fascinating, but I had a hard time staying engaged. I expected a quicker pace. It certainly sheds light on Hopi traditions, which was refreshing to read about, but I wish it flowed better.
