Product Description Examines the birth and death of the extremely bright exploding stars known as supernovae and their effects on history and science. From School Library Journal Grade 1012 In 1987 a "nearby" star, visible only from the southern hemisphere, suddenly exploded. That celebrated eventsupernova 1987is the focus of this book. However, before covering the supernova in depth, Lampton reviews a broad swatch of astronomy and physics, beginning with the ancient Greeks and ending with detectors for ghostlike subatomic particles called neutrinos. Along the way other famous supernovas and their effect on science are also discussed. The review helps set the stage for explaining 1987's supernova, but the whirlwind tour could be too much for beginners. Some previous exposure to the basics of astronomy would be helpful. The sections discussing the recent supernova contain the most recent findings. However, because events are still unfolding, this book's description won't be the final chapter on supernova 1987. Illustrations consist of blackandwhite photographs and illustrations, collected from various sources. A helpful glossary is also included.
