Product DescriptionAccelerated Reader is a program based on the fact that students become more motivated to read if they are tested on the content of the books they have read and are rewarded for correct answers. Students read each book, individually take the test on the computer, and receive gratification when they score well. Schools using the Accelerated Reader program have seen a significant increase in reading among their students.Fiftysix newly released titles that provide a fascinating portrait of the many peoples that inhabit Africa. These books have natural curriculum tieins with multiculturalism, geography, and social studies. From School Library JournalGr 58The complicated history of this area is accurately and fairly clearly presented, and the chapters on culture describe some of the customs and relationships that have helped the Swazi kingdom to survive. Yet central themes of Swazi life and their significance are not always adequately explained: the checks and balances established among the king, queen mother, and councils; the power derived from the ritual responsibilities of the monarchy; the unifying effects of the traditional land tenure system and the problems created by the growing numbers who get little benefit from it (puzzlingly referred to as the 'African elite'); and developments since the death of Sobhuza II in 1982. When customs and decisions are described without sufficient explanation, readers are likely to see them simply as exotic. The choice of illustrations adds significantly to this problem. They overwhelmingly show images of traditional roles and ceremonial dress, even when the text mentions traditions that are being modified in response to a changing world. As in the series generally, the introduction does not support the text, and neither the maps nor index are adequate. While this is not one of the best entries in the series, some collections will welcome a description of this unique kingdom.Loretta Kreider Andrews, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore, MDCopyright 1997 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
