Main character Paula Butters has raised her two twin redheaded daughters all on her own. She now embarks on a journey to success as an artist that proves to be touched with various flavors. Some rich with the bold flavor of coffee, others dangerously peppered black, and in the end vivid delicious red healthy green. Her best friend, Mavis Didier brings her a client that will surely grant her longdesired wish for success. A truly antithesis of a character Jack Crosley, he is charismatic, charming, and very successful as a megastar, businessman, and philanthropist. She delves into a black area by giving in to a brief seduction with him. Later to find, any association with him ends in disaster for her, and one of her daughters, Camille. Two men come into Paula's and Mavis' life, they act as a wakeup call, then later lead them back to love. Maynard Nelson, a gentle giant and once employed by Jack Crosley find his own way back to a better life and winds up becoming Paula's savior and husband. Mavis Didier goes out of character from being a highpowered career woman to a pathetic lovesick victim from a rocky romance with Paula's exboyfriend Parker Evans. She, too finds an escape.
