Ruines en overblijfselen langs de kuststreek van Syrie getuigen van een rijk verleden, doch zijn bij het brede publiek weinig gekend. Kruisvaarders, Romeinen en Feniciers bouwden er nochtans talrijke vestigingen en steden die tot op vandaag een verrassende indruk maken op haar bezoekers. De regio geniet recent vernieuwde aandacht dankzij Belgisch onderzoek te Jebleh, Tell Tweini en Tell Kazel, dat bijdraagt tot nieuwe inzichten in de geschiedenis van de Syrische kuststreek. De onderzoeksprojecten te Jebleh, Tell Tweini en Tell Kazel gaven de studenten archeologie van de K.U.Leuven aanleiding om het verborgen verleden van de Syrische kuststreek nader te bekijken. Naast een tentoonstelling in het voorjaar van 2008 leidde dit ook tot deze publicatie, waarin ze op basis van de overgeleverde materiele resten de geschiedenis van de kuststreek per tijdvak bespreken. Naast het historisch overzicht spitst elke bijdrage zich toe op een eigen thema, zoals nijverheid, ontspanning, krijgskunst of de dood.
