Puberty can be especially tough when young people have autism or other special needs. Through simple stories similar to Carol Grays Social Stories , author Mary Wrobel teaches caregivers exactly what to say (and not say) and shows how you can create helpful stories of your own. Mary addresses hygiene, modesty, body growth and development, menstruation, touching, personal safety, and more. Young students can benefit from selfcare skills such as using the toilet, brushing teeth, and washing hands. Parents and teachers should begin teaching these necessary skills as early as possible, even from ages three to five. The ultimate goal is to maximize the childs potential for independence and lifelong social success.

Unfortunately, the book arrived with a dented cover, but the content is really useful for my son. It addresses puberty and hygiene in a way that is relatable for him, which is why I’m giving it 2 stars. Hopefully, future editions can have better packaging!

Helpful but a bit overwhelming
This curriculum has great information, but I found some parts a little too detailed for my daughter. She’s 11 and gets overwhelmed easily, so we’re taking it slow. Overall, it’s a good starting point for discussing these topics. Just be ready to guide them through it!

Great resource for my son
I bought this hygiene and puberty guide for my 12-year-old son who is on the spectrum. It's written in a really clear way that he can understand. The illustrations are helpful, and it covers everything from personal hygiene to dealing with changes during puberty. Highly valuable for young people with autism!
