Reefer Charlie Fox rode the rails from 1928 to 1939; from 1939 to 1965 he hitched rides in automobiles and traveled by foot. From Indiana to British Columbia, from Arkansas to Texas, from Utah to Mexico, he was part of the grand hobo tradition that has all but passed away from American life.He camped in hobo jungles, slept under bridges and in sand houses at railroad yards, ate rattlesnake meat, fresh California grapes, and fish speared by the Indians of the Northwest. He quickly learned both the beauty and the dangers of his chosen way of life. One lesson learned early on was that there are distinct differences among hoboes, tramps, and bums. As the alltime king of hoboes, Jeff Davis, used to say, Hoboes will work, tramps wont, and bums cant.Tales of an American Hobo is a lasting legacy to conventional society, teaching about a bygone era of American history and a rare breed of humanity who chose to live by the rails and on the road.

This book is a gem for anyone fascinated by America’s past! Each tale is like a window into another world. The author's clear writing style made it easy to envision each experience. I've already lent it to a friend who loves history as much as I do!

Interesting but could use more depth
The book had some great stories, but I felt some of them lacked depth. It was nice to learn about the lives of hobos, but I wanted to see more personal reflections. Still, it’s a unique read if you’re into biographies.

An eye-opening journey through history
'Tales of an American Hobo' is both touching and educational. The author does a fantastic job of portraying the realities of hobo life in a compelling way. I gifted this to my father, who appreciates stories rooted in American culture.

Hard to connect with the stories
I wanted to love this book, but I found it hard to connect with some of the tales. They felt a bit disjointed, and it didn’t flow as smoothly as I had hoped. It’s still worth a read if you’re intrigued by the hobo lifestyle, just don’t expect a seamless narrative.

A fascinating glimpse into hobo life
I didn't know what to expect with 'Tales of an American Hobo,' but it truly opened my eyes to a different lifestyle. The stories are vivid and relatable, capturing the struggles and joys of those who lived on the road. Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone interested in American history.
