Product Description A collection of fairy tales adapted from the French and English folklore tradition of Canada From Publishers Weekly Martin has compiled and retold tales with familiar motifs that have a Canadian setting, stories that were brought to that country by European settlers. This is a richly compelling collection, replete with cheats, rascals, princesses, fleetfooted horses, tricksters and clever young brothers. Gal's paintings structure space magically, blending past and present, with incandescent colors, and he lifts the reader instantly into a fairy tale dimension. There are but two flaws: the acknowledgements convey much information but are buried in the back; and "The Healing Spring," the first story, is pointless and implausible, throwing off the smooth tone of the book with jarring morbidity. All ages. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal Grade 37 A wellwritten and enjoyable collection of Canadian folk tales in an attractive format. The white French and English settlers of Canada brought with them the folk tales of their native lands, and, like all settlers everywhere, they adapted the tales to the life they developed in their new homeland. Martin retells here 12 of these Canadian folk tales of European origin. Several of them are entertaining variants of Jack and the Beanstalk,'' Bluebeard,'' the Perrault Sleeping Beauty,'' and The Brave Little Tailor.'' A version of Beauty and the Beast'' has a nice switch, with Beauty'' being male and Beast'' being female. These variants would make this book a strong choice for children who are studying folktales. One framed, fullpage, fullcolor illustration appears with each story. The people and setting are portrayed in realistic detail, but every once in a while an enchanted detail such as a unicorn or an elfin ear shows up. The pictures serve as a splendid springboard for this outstanding collection. Kay McPherson, Central AtlantaFulton Public LibraryCopyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.
