The popularity of the French Defense has surged to the point where it rivals the Sicilian and the Spanish in the chess international tournament arenas. Always known for its solid character, the French offers Black excellent winning chances in the main lines of the Winawer and in many side variations. But what of the Tarrasch Variation, 3. Nd2. Here the play often takes a quiet or positional character. The Argentine Chess Champion Carlos Guimard has developed a system based on an early 3.
