Geschildert wird die dramatische Flucht einer ostpreuischen Familie. Im Winter 1945 berlebt sie das Schicksal mit vielen anderen trotz klirrender Klte, oft hungernd und frierend im Wald oder in Feldscheunen. Die Tragdie ereignet sich in Ostpreuen, Westpreuen und Danzig und wird nach dem Verlust des Pferdefuhrwerks im zugefrorenen Haff durch die Rettung mit einem Schiff von der Halbinsel Hela nach Dnemark beendet. Nach 2 1/2 Jahren hinter Stacheldraht in dnischen Lagern findet die Familie in Deutschland den Vater wieder.
