En las pasadas dos dcadas, se han desarrollado muchas tcnicas para la reduccin del speckle, las cuales tienen como consigna removerlo, reteniendo los detalles y los bordes en imgenes de Radar de Apertura Sinttica, en ingls Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). La mayora de los algoritmos estndar usan una mscara la cual se desplaza por la imagen mientras se convoluciona en dos dimensiones con sta. Por lo general, en dichos filtros se hace imperioso estimar la varianza local de la porcin de la imagen con speckle que se vincula con la mscara y de esta forma poder realizar el proceso de filtrado. El resultado es generalmente un nivel de speckle muy reducido en reas que son homogneas, no obstante, la imagen resulta borrosa (con blur) o sobre suavizada dando lugar a prdidas en detalles en reas nohomogneas tales como bordes o lneas. Esto ocasiona una dificultad en el uso del SAR basado en imgenes de sensado remoto para clasificar, interpretar y analizar exactamente el terreno sobre todo en aplicaciones en las que la estimacin de la seccin eficaz del radar es importante. El principal objetivo en la reduccin del speckle es removerlo sin perder los detalles importantes.
