Dieses Buch geht auf ein Projekt zuriick, das unter meiner Leitung an der Wirtschafts und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultat der Uni versitat Augsburg in den Jahren 1988 1990 durchgeruhrt und von der Forschungskommission der Universitat gefOrdert wurde. Das Resultat ist eine Studie, die sich nur sehr schwer einem Wissen schaftsgebiet zuordnen HiSt: Zwar geht es um die Untersuchung der Einfiihrung bestimmter Techniken in zwei Industriebetrieben, jedoch reichen ingenieurwissenschaftliche oder okonomische Fragestellun gen und Theorien kaum aus, um den komplexen Bedeutungsgehalt eines solchen Vorgangs zu analysieren und darzustellen. Daraus habe ich allerdings nicht den SchluB gezogen, lediglich eine Vielzahl von Modellen und Theorien zu addieren. Vielmehr soll die Analyse sozialer Bedeutungen, die sich in der Technik objektivieren, als ein dem Untersuchungsgegenstand immanenter sozialer und soziokultu reller Konstruktions und KonstitutionsprozeB aufgefaBt werden. In dieser Weise erscheint das untersuchte Detail als in sich reflektierte Totalitat, die zu erfassen, die Leistungsfahigkeit paradigmatisierter Theorien iiberschreitet. Das kommt in der fiir wissenschaftliche Darstellungen ungewohnten Sprache zum Ausdruck, in der der Text der Fallrekonstruktion (Ka pitel II) abgefaBt ist. Der Text laBt sich nicht nach Empirie, Theorie und Narration trennen. Gerade dadurch, so hoffe ich, wird der Leser angeregt und nicht der Langeweile so vieler industriesoziologischer Untersuchungen ausgesetzt.
