Tristram Engelhardt, a partir d'une vision generale postmoderne, estime que des interventions genetiques prudentes doivent etre laissees a l'initiative des individus et des communautes. D'autres philosophes anglosaxons partent d'une philosophie plus empiriste et utilitariste qui enjoint d'analyser les risques, plus prosaiquement, comme des eventualites dont il s'agit de peser les couts et les avantages.
