Der Begriff des technischen Fortschritts wurde und wird in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften auf sehr differenzierte Art und Weise inhaltlich ausgedeutet und interpretiert. Insbesondere seit den Anfngen der neoklassischen Wachstumstheorie hat die Anzahl der empirischen Untersuchungen und modelltheoretischen Formulierungen zu dieser Thematik stndig zugenommen. Ausgehend von der empirisch relevanten Frage der Messung des technischen Fortschritts, versucht dieses Buch einen allgemeinen berblick ber die bisherige Entwicklung der Theorie der Innovationen zu geben. Whrend die Kapitel drei und vier als Aufbereitung der "traditionellen" Theorie verstanden werden drften Ausgangspunkt sind hier die Arbeiten von Solow, Kaldor und Arrow sowie die Denkanstze von Schumpeter, Heuss, Kirzner, v.Hayek und Nelson/Winter umfat das fnfte Kapitel jene Arbeiten, die den heutigen Stand der Innovationsforschung reprsentieren. Es werden Modelle vorgestellt, die insbesondere die Rolle der Unternehmung im Innovationsproze sowie die Bedeutung des Wettbewerbs fr das Innovationspotential einer Wirtschaft bercksichtigen. Diese theoretischen berlegungen werden ergnzt durch eine Reihe empirischer Untersuchungsergebnisse. Darberhinaus wird im sechsten Kapitel ein eigenes kontrolltheoretisches Modell entwickelt, das an die im fnften Kapitel aufgearbeitete Literatur anknpft.
