Die Analyse der Institutionalisierung technischer Bildung in Deutschland ist ein Stiefkind deutscher Bildungsgeschichte. Die mittleren Bildungsinstitutionen, zu denen zentral die Technische Fachschule (Baugewerkschule, Maschinenbauschule, Ingenieurschule etc.) zahlt, wurde bisher nicht oder nur unzureichend in den Blick genommen. Die vorliegende Studie schliesst deshalb insofern eine Forschungslucke als sie diesen technischen Schultyp ins Zentrum der Untersuchung stellt und die Etablierung sowie den institutionellen Wandel dieser Qualifizierungs und Weiterbildungsagentur von Technikern und nichtakademischen Ingenieuren zwischen 1890 und 1938 beleuchtet. Eingebettet in die staatliche Regulierung des Systems Beruflicher Bildung entwickelte sich die Technische Fachschule in dem untersuchten Zeitraum zu einer tragenden Saule sowohl des berufsbildenden als auch des deutschen Schulwesens insgesamt.
