Vor allem die USA haben in dieser Hinsicht ganze Vorarbeit geleistet: Ob Woody Harrelson in "Natural Born Killers", ob Metthew McConaughey in "Texas Chainsaw massacre" oder Christian Bale in "American Psycho", es gibt kein entrinnen mehr. Waren SerienkillerFilme Anfangs eher schlecht und billig produziert, so fanden sie mit dem Welterfolg von "Das Schweigen der Lmmer" im Jahre 1991 schliesslich den Weg in die Kinos. Die Grenze zwischen Marketing und Ethik lst sich im Zeitalter des Infotainment immer mehr auf, indem Gewalt einerseits von der Gesellschaft verurteilt und andererseits in den Medien zelebriert wird. Die USA stehen, neben Japan, hinsichtlich der Darstellung von Gewalt in Film und Fernsehen an der Spitze. Es ist deshalb anzunehmen, dass Gewaltdarstellungen auch und v.a. in den zahlreichen Filmen ber Serienmrder vorherrschen, die seit den 90er Jahren vornehmlich in den USA entstanden sind. Die dieser Arbeit zugrunde liegende Hypothese lautet deshalb wie folgt: Im amerikanischen Film wird grsstenteils physische Gewalt dargestellt, dabei berwiegt die explizit gezeigte Mordhandlung gegenber den Folgen und Andeutungen derselben. Um diese Annahme besttigen zu knnen, werden im Folgenden zwei Filme ber reale Serienmrder auf ihre Gewaltdarstellungen untersucht. Bei den Untersuchungsobjekten handelt es sich einerseits um den amerikanischen Film "Ted Bundy" und adererseits um den deutschen Film "Der Totmacher".
