Eine hohe Produktqualitt sowie eine flexible Produktion von mglichst kostengnstigen Produkten sind daher notwendig, um auf dem Markt zu bestehen. Ferner haben eine verlssliche Einhaltung der zugesagten Termine, kurze Durchlauf und Lieferzeiten sowie geringe Bestnde in den letzten Jahrzehnten mehr an Bedeutung gewonnen, whrend frher die hoch bewertete Kapazittsauslastung im Fertigungsprozess mehr im Vordergrund stand. Dieser Wandel vom Verkufer zum Kufermarkt durch zunehmend gesttigte Mrkte fhrte von der Massenfertigung zu stetig wachsenden kundenorientierten Auftragsproduktionen in Unternehmen. Mit zunehmender Fertigung kundenspezifischer Produktvarianten und der Entwicklung komplexer Problemlsungen stiegen auch die Zahl der Rohstoffe und Bauteile sowie die zeitlich zu koordinierenden Fertigungsablufe. Gleichzeitig gilt es heute, die Kapitalbindung im Umlaufvermgen durch den Abbau von Bestnden in Roh, Halb und Fertigwaren zu reduzieren und kostspielige Lagerhaltung zu vermeiden, um gleichzeitig die Flexibilitt im Unternehmen zu erhhen. So kann stattdessen mehr in die Entwicklung innovativer Produkte und Technologien investiert werden, da mit dem strukturellen Wandel in den Produktionsprogrammen von Industriebetrieben und dem dadurch ansteigenden Komplexittsgrad immer leistungsfhigere Techniken unumgnglich geworden sind, um Wettbewerbsvorteile zu generieren.
