In der ersten Halfte des 20. Jahrhunderts bemuhten sich eine Reihe von chinesischen Historikern und Geographen, den Wandel Chinas vom universalen Kaiserreich zum modernen Nationalstaat zu erklaren. Sie reagierten auf die nationale Bedrohung durch die europaischen Machte und Japan mit einem eigenen NationalismusDiskurs, der nicht auf westliche Konzepte zuruckgriff. Es entstand ein moderner Forschungszweig der Historischen Geographie, Studiengesellschaften wurden gegrundet und Fachzeitschriften ins Leben gerufen. Inhaltlich konzentrierten sich die historischgeographischen Studien auf vier Themenbereiche: die Geschichte staatlicher Raumordnung im alten China, die verschiedenen Strategien der Territorialpolitik, die wirtschaftliche Erschliessung von Grenzregionen sowie die Methoden der ethnischen Integration im Vielvolkerstaat. Verwirklicht wurde das Projekt der Nationsbildung von der kommunistischen Regierung nach 1949. Die Historischen Geographen waren daran zwar nicht unmittelbar beteiligt, jedoch dienten viele ihrer Ideen als Orientierung beim Aufbau der chinesischen Volksrepublik in den Konturen eines einheitlichen Vielvolkerstaates.
