Jahrhunderts ist geprgt von materieller Vielfalt, knstlerischen Ausdrucksformen und Thematiken. So ein breites Ausma und Wechselspiel der Kunstrichtungen hatte es in der Kunstgeschichte zuvor nicht gegeben. Dabei ist es auch nicht verwunderlich, dass die Kunst mit Textilien eine Wiedergeburt erlebte. Textile Materialien galten lange aufgrund ihrer sinnlichen Besetzung und ihrer Materialeigenschaften eher als minderwertig" und wurden dem Kunsthandwerk anstatt der hohen angewandten Kunst zugeordnet. Auerdem standen weiche" Materialien ganz im Gegensatz zu den klassischen traditionellen Materialien der Kunst. Auch ihre Konnotation des Weiblichen schreckte Knstler ab. Mit dem Gebrauch von Textilien in der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts kam es zu einer enormen Anwendungserweiterung des Materials. Die bis dahin geltenden Gesetze ber die Verwendung des Materials wurden gesprengt. Neben den jahrhundertelang betriebenen traditionellen textilen Techniken wie beispielsweise Weben, Knpfen, Sticken, Hkeln oder Nhen erfuhren sie eine Renaissance, indem sich Kunstschaffende wie Picasso, Braque, Rauschenberg und unzhlige weitere an das kunstfremde" Material herantrauten und es in ihren Kunstwerken gebrauchten. Sie erkannten das Besondere an Textilien, was sich durch hohe Anpassungsfhigkeit und der Mglichkeit des Abdrucks auszeichnete. Heutzutage wird das Material in den verschiedensten Techniken und in Kombination mit anderen Werkstoffen fr zum Beispiel Raumobjekte, Skulpturen oder Gestaltungen in der Natur oder Landschaft genutzt. Aber auch die traditionellen Tapisserietechniken haben ihre Gltigkeit beibehalten und behaupten ihr Recht.
