Die Studie setzt sich kritisch mit der bisherigen Textkritik und Editionsphilologie auseinander und entwickelt anhand der 'Parzival'Handschrift Cgm 19 und der 'Tristan'Handschrift Cgm 51 die These, dass jeder mittelalterliche berlieferungszeuge seine eigene Wertigkeit besitzt und zeitgebundenes kulturelles Wissen reprsentiert, was nur erkannt werden kann, wenn divergierende Handschriften nicht nur als defizitre Varianten eines ursprnglichen 'Textoriginals' verstanden werden. Baisch bestimmt die Genese, den Status und die Funktion von Textvarianten in der mittelalterlichen volkssprachlichen berlieferung mittels einer Analyse historischer Gebrauchszusammenhnge neu und fhrt Edition und Interpretation methodisch zusammen. Er versteht Textkritik als Funktionsgeschichte der berlieferung mittelalterlicher Texte. Die Arbeit ist ein wichtiger Beitrag zur derzeit lebhaft gefhrten Debatte ber Prinzipien der modernen Editionsphilologie und den mittelalterlichen Textbegriff.
