The original form of the 'Ancient Regulations' for Chan (Zen) monastic life, established by the eighthcentury Zen master Paichang was lost, surviving only in fragments in later compilations. The fourteenthcentury Zen master Tehui drew on extant works to compile the revised Paichang Zen Monastic Regulations under the Yan Imperial Edict, the text on which this translation by Shohei Ichimura is based.
