Baroque, primarily as a period term but also in the sense of style or a complex of styles and even a way of regarding the world, has become widely accepted to designate that different sensibility intervening between the Renaissance and classicism. The present book deals, above all, with the poetry of the Baroque. Its purpose is twofold. First, to present a comprehensive survey of the Baroque: the state of scholarship in the field; problems in the definition and use of Baroque as a term and concept; the relationship of mannerism to Baroque; the political, religious, scientific, and philosophical background of the age; the possible impact of nonliterary events on the evolution of Baroque taste, art, and outlook; and the various types of Baroque poetry and aspects of Baroque poetic style. The second purpose is to illustrate points made in the first, or survey, part of the book by giving a broad selection of 150 representative poems, mostly lyrics, in the original languages and accompanying English translations, which have been taken from the following literatures: English, American, Dutch, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Portuguese, Polish, Modern Latin, Czech, Croatian, and Russian. The poems are divided into two main groupings: religious, mystic, and meditative poetry ("The World of the Spirit"), and amatory poetry ("The World of the Senses"). It is noteworthy that this is the first comparative anthology of Baroque poems in which Slavic poetry is extensively discussed and represented.
