Cycling is wildly popular all over Belgium, but in the northern, Dutchspeaking half of the country it is part of the psyche. Tiny Flanders boasts a population of just 6 million, yet this small corner of northwest Europe has produced eight winners of the Tour de France, five times as many professional riders as Italy or Spain.Blending reportage, interviews, observation, biography, and history, and written with affectionate humor by a committed Belgophile, The Beast, the Emperor and the Milkman tells the story of Flanders neurotic love affair with bike racing, from tough early heroes such as Jules Vanhevelwounded by mortar fire in World War I and leading the world championship road race until he collided with a cowto latterday ironmen such as Tom Boonen, threetimes winner of the Tour of Flanders and owner of a pet donkey named Kamiel.

I bought this for my fiancé, who loves cycling books, but he found it hard to connect with. Some parts felt disjointed and not very engaging. He's a dedicated rider but felt this one fell short of his favorites.

Captivating Stories, Great Prose!
'The Emperor and the Milkman' is a beautifully written book that immerses you in the cycling culture of Flanders. The descriptions of the landscapes made me want to grab my bike and ride immediately! A must-read for sure!

A Wild Ride Through Flanders
I just finished reading 'The Emperor and the Milkman' and wow, what a journey! The way it captures the essence of cycling through the Flemish heartlands is incredible. I felt like I was pedaling along with the author. Highly recommend it for any cycling enthusiast!

Took a While to Get into It
Honestly, it was a bit slow at first. The writing is nice, but it took me a few chapters to really get hooked. I enjoyed the stories once I got through the opening, but I almost set it down a couple of times.

Interesting but Lacks Depth
The book had some cool stories about cycling in Flanders, but I expected more in-depth insights into the culture. It’s still a fun read for a casual cyclist like me. Just don’t expect a thorough historical analysis.
