The reader will find, in this book, a collection tales about ghosts of the Mississippi River. The events described in this volume cover the period from the 1880s to 1985. They are, however, not in chronological or any other order. Each is a separate chapter, unrelated to any of the others. Whenever possible, diligent effort was made to confirm these stories by getting information from other sources. That was, of course, not always possible. Ghost stories are often know to only a very small number of people. The reader must appreciate the fact that some of these stories could cause embarrassment to people living today. Because of that, some of the stories use fictitious names. In those cases, it should be understand that any similarity to actual people, living or dead, is purely coincidental. The author hopes that his book will serve to document some of the tales heretofore only handed down by word of mouth. They are part of the heritage of our river and deserve to be preserved. It is emphasized that these are in the nature of folk tales. If the reader is looking for sensational stories of blood and gore he wont find them here. If he is looking for stories with a heavy religious orientation, he had better look elsewhere. If, however, some pleasant (and accurate) accounts of ghosts who have resided here along the rive appeal to you, I invite you to spend a few hours with me in The Best of the Mississippi River Ghosts.
