A Muslim from a learned and cosmopolitan family from the interior of West Africa, Baquaqua was enslaved and taken first to Brazil, then to the US. He escaped through the Underground Railroad to New York, Boston, then Haiti. Soon after, he returned to the US, went to college in upstate New York, published his autobiography in 1854, and left for England the next year. Historians of slavery Law (U. of Stirling) and Lovejoy (York U.) present an annotated edition of that biography. This second edition is revised and enlarged from the first, for which no date is cited. Annotation 2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
