Product Description When the evil magician Myrddin appears, determined to subdue the monks of Holybury Abbey and the surrounding villages, Father Brendan and his young friends must rely on magical beasts and the help of Arthur, Guinevere, and Merlin, summoned from their sleep on the Isles of Truth. When the evil magician Myrddin appears, Father Brendan and his young friends must rely on magical beasts and the help of King Arthur, Guinevere, and Merlin, summoned from their sleep on the Isles of Truth From School Library Journal Grade 48 When the evil magician Myrddin casts a spell over the monks of Holybury Abbey, only young Elric and Bridget and their friend Father Brendan manage to escape and oppose his plans for gaining even more power. Old Father Brendan has just finished writing a beautifully illustrated book on the life of his namesake, St. Brendan. When help is most needed, the book's illustrations come alive, and the white bird Avis, the monkey Babwyn, and the little dragon Wyvern come to the aid of the three companions. Avis leads them beyond our world to the Paradise of the Birds, where they learn that to defeat Myrddin they must awaken the sleeping King Arthur, his queen, and the great wizard Merlin. The plot moves swiftly and is full of intriguing details (such as the magical herbs that can be taken from Brendan's book), but the writing is stiff and characterization is minimal. The theme of good against evil is a universal one, and stories involving King Arthur are always appealing, but none of these details can make up for the lack of skillful writing. Ruth S.
