Shaws rich and fascinating work provides a startling look at early Christian notions of the bodydiet, sexuality, the passions, and especially the ideal of virginityand sheds important light on the growth ofChristian ideals that remain powerful cultural forces even today.Focusing on the fourth and early fifth centuries, Shaw considers three types of Christian argumentsphysiological, psychological, and eschatologicalabout the efficacy of fasting in the ascetic pursuit of chastity. Demonstrating their connections also illumines relationships between body and belief, theory and behavior, and physical selfabnegation and theological speculation. In the process, Shaw examines a variety of texts from the seventh century b.c.e. to the seventh century c.e., including medical treatises, philosophical writings, Christian homilies, and theological treatises.

This book covers some fascinating ideas about early Christian practices, but I found the language a bit heavy at times. I really appreciated the exploration of fasting and sexuality, but I had to reread several passages to fully grasp the arguments. It's a solid read, but not the easiest one.

Not What I Expected
I wanted to learn more about how early Christians viewed sexuality, but this book didn't quite hit the mark for me. The focus on fasting overshadowed the sexual aspects, which I thought would be more balanced. Also, the shipping took longer than I anticipated, which was a bummer. It may not be for everyone.

Insightful and Thought-Provoking Read
I picked up 'The Burden of the Flesh' for my theology class, and it did not disappoint! It's a deep dive into fasting and sexuality in early Christianity, and the perspectives offered really challenged my thinking. The writing is engaging, making complex topics accessible. Definitely worth the read for anyone interested in church history.
