Il libro ha come protagonista il giovane Herbert, musicista dallanimo nobile, cresciuto tra Chopin, Beethoven, i suoni della Carolina del Sud e i canti dei neri nelle chiese. Sua moglie Anne , al contrario, altera, chiassosa e feroce, totalmente priva di gusto. I due finiscono per dar vita a ununione infelice, in cui dominano la volgarit e la sopraffazione, davanti alla quale per luomo esiste una sola, drammatica via duscita. Scritto intorno alla met degli anni Venti, rifiutato da tutte le case editrici americane, Il caso Crump venne pubblicato in Francia nel 1931 con una prefazione di Thomas Mann, e arriv negli Stati Uniti solo nel 47, seppur in una versione edulcorata. Un romanzo controverso, che fu caro a molti artisti e intellettuali del primo Novecento e che torna ora a disposizione dei lettori di oggi.
