A scathing, razorsharp satire set on a New Orleansbound riverboat, The ConfidenceMan exposes the fraudulent optimism of so many American idols and idealistsRalph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and P. T. Barnum, in particularand draws a dark vision of a country being swallowed by its illusions of progress. Why is Dalkey Archive doing yet another edition of The ConfidenceMan? And why is it doing Melville at all? First, this edition, originally published by BobbsMerrill over forty years ago, contains remarkable annotations by H. Bruce Franklin, intended for both the general reader and the scholar. Its an edition we have long admired. More importantly, we believe that The ConfidenceMan is Americas first postmodern novelgamelike, darkly comic, and completely inventive.

The book started off strong, but I felt it dragged a bit in the middle. The premise is interesting, and the ending wrapped things up nicely. If you can get past the slower parts, it's worth reading.

Disappointed with the Ending
I had high hopes for 'His Masquerade', but the ending left me wanting more. The buildup was great, but it felt rushed and unsatisfying. I wish there was more closure for the characters.

Loved the Characters!
What a delightful read! The characters in this book felt real and relatable. The Confidence Man has a way of making you care about their journey. Couldn’t put it down!

A Fun and Engaging Read!
I really enjoyed 'His Masquerade' by The Confidence Man. The twists kept me guessing and the characters were well-developed. Perfect for anyone who loves a good mystery with a dash of romance!
