THE COOK'S OWN BOOK (1832), an 1832 cooking encyclopedia by "a Boston Housekeeper." THE COOK'S OWN BOOK (1832) is a basic reference & research volume which had at least 13 editions between 1832 & 1860. It was one of the most influential books on cooking ever produced in America. It contains over 2,500 recipes, alphabetically arranged. The informative & entertaining preface contains 36 pages describing all forms of cooking, proper care of utensils, & a discourse on the cook's importance to the "public health welfare." The rare first edition from which this reprint is made was owned by Mary Middleton Rutledge Fogg, both of whose grandfathers signed the Declaration of Independence. This reprint contains no textual changes. An editor's preface has been added describing the historic importance of the original owner & her family & is illustrated with photographs of exquisite portraits of the Middleton, Rutledge & Fogg families
