Harding, and San Francisco, where Elijah's brother Josh shows him a new way to look at life. Memorable characters, such as Twig, Bear, Boss, Lucretia, Hiram and his dog JJ, Miss Hoar, Black Betty, White Hair, and Duke inhabit the novel.
