Purpose of a catOne daughter of night the cat calls from the cellar window. In my dream, I am distracted, choosing a path overgrown with red fern. The roads branch the way the goldtongued frog grows legs from the moist earth. One leads to a high place beyond the crossroads. But in my ears, cat scratches like chalk on a slate board. It is love she wants, to rub it against the frigid grip of solitude. To see, to feel, is not enough, she wants to crawl under my skin. Under my skin at night, a cat prowls, crawling red trees of lungs down to where the swamp builds liquids of life. Under my skin, she is silent. She fishes by the quiet old sea. I walk in the night, awake. Dark rays & coelacanths swim in the sea of this man. He catches what he can, forms hauled up from radiant waters. Seacreatures like dark organs line the shore. On the shore the cat sits, at the window to my ocean. She waits for dawn. At night she slits the gullets open & lets the man fall out.
